Life Jacket Competent User (LJCU)
Course outline
This course has been designed for personnel who will operate in the ‘warm’ zone at a water rescue incident and personnel who will operate near water as part of their key job function e.g., construction works, EA water hydrometry staff etc. As such it is not intended that they will enter the water and a manual or auto inflation lifejacket is worn as PPE for accidental water entry only.
Course content

- Hydrology and water hazards
- Dynamic risk assessment
- Risk zones
- Cold water immersion
- Personal protective equipment
- PFD types and standards
- Firing mechanisms
- Adaption for high risk areas
- Periodic maintenance/inspection regime
- Pre-use and post-use checks
- Accidental immersion and auto inflation
- Still and moving water swimming drills
- Selection and correct fitting of lifejacket as part of PPE system
- Manual inflation and deflation
- Rescue drills with lifejacket

Confident swimmer
